The ongoing erosion and lack of maintenance of the Mosul dam has led to a worrisome situation requiring urgent preparedness planning. At the request of OCHA Iraq, a small UNDAC team was deployed to Iraq to support operational preparedness planning for the potential failure of the Mosul dam. The UNDAC Team developed likely scenarios which form the basis for planning assumptions in case of a potential failure of the dam, further feeding into the recommendations. The team also developed protocols for facilitating likely international assistance to fast track the arrival of incoming humanitarian staff and relief items based on its discussion with the National Operations Center, in the event the Mosul dam fails and proposed a civil-military arrangement.

The presence of the UNDAC team in Iraq has certainly raised awareness of the profile of the dam and further recognition among the government to treat the matter urgently.
