OCHA’s Emergency Services Branch recently fielded missions to support Humanitarian Country Teams in Lesotho and Swaziland as part of the El Niño response. The outcome of the mission clearly showed the value of the IASC Emergency Response Preparedness (ERP) approach, even in an ongoing response, in identifying critical gaps in response and preparedness and identifying practical actions to address the gaps. It strongly recommended that the ERP approach is applied in all affected El Niño countries and given the increased likelihood of a La Niña event, efforts should be made to adopt the ERP approach in the countries likely to be affected as early as possible.
