Message to the network in Asia – Yosuke Okita
The year 2015 reminded us of the importance of “Preparedness”. A lot of international USAR teams and UNDAC team were deployed to the Nepal Earthquake in April. It would be fair to say that our preparedness activities in UNDAC and INSARAG, especially the INSARAG Asia-Pacific Exercise in Nepal 2009 contributed to the smooth coordination in the field.
In order to respond the future disasters, our Preparedness activities in Asia 2015 include:
- INSARAG – 2 IEC/Rs (NZ and Japan), INSARAG A-P Exercise (Mongolia), USAR Capacity Assessment Mission (Thailand), A-P Meeting in Abu Dhabi (Chair 2015: NZ)
- UNDAC – UNDAC Consolidation Course (Japan), OSOCC ToT course in Singapore
In 2016, we will keep on strengthening response preparedness as well as exploring the cooperation with regional response mechanisms, such as ASEAN ERAT team and AHA Centre. The INSARAG Regional Chair 2016 will be China, and Japan will host the INSARAG Team Leader Meeting. Singapore is planning to host the UNDAC Global Induction Course. INSARAG A-P exercise will be in Jogjakarta, Indonesia, and we are pleased to invite UNDAC members, medical teams, and regional mechanisms such as the ERAT team.
